On this disk is most of the work I've done with S-Com since last January. "Humans, Machines, Chaos," for cl., f.h., and string qt. was the first piece I completed (last April). It was premiered in Portland, Maine in August and then performed again in Hartford, Connecticut in October.
"Herrick," for pno., vln., and cello, is the 2nd piece I completed with S-Com. It was premiered on January 11 on a live broadcast in New York City (WNYC, it's a National Public Radio affiliate station). Herrick's concert premiere was on January 14 in Englewood, New Jersey. The group that commissioned it, the Herrick Trio, will be playing it on other occassions during this year's concert season. One of the concerts may be at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC; I'll keep you informed.
In a few weeks, I'm going to begin composing another piece with S-Com. It will be for trumpet and cello, probably about 20 minutes in length; not exactly a common chamber combination, but I do think that these two instruments will complement each other in interesting and provocative ways.
While composing "Humans, Machines, Chaos" and "Herrick," I made many edits to the .smf files in FINALE--which means that if you compile the scores I've enclosed, they probably won't match the finished compositions on a "note for note" basis. The scores will show you my thought process, though and how I've worked my way into the S-Com language.
If you know of any ensembles that might be interested in performing these pieces, let me know. Somewhere in the future, I'm hoping that I might find a group that would be interested in releasing a CD of "Humans, Machines, Chaos," "Herrick," and the piece for tpt. and cello that I'm about to begin.
In any event, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts about these scores. I'll keep you posted as other performances based upon my S-Com work are scheduled.
